Engine 4501: The Historic Heart of Our First Beer

Why Chattooga Brewing Company's debut lager honors the locomotive that built our community

When Engine 4501's whistle echoes through Chattooga County on Saturday afternoons, it's more than just a nostalgic sound—it's a reminder of the iron horse that helped build Summerville into the community we know today. That's exactly why we chose to name our first beer after this historic locomotive.

The Railroad That Built Summerville

The arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s transformed Summerville from a small mountain settlement into the thriving county seat of Chattooga County. The tracks didn't just bring trains—they brought opportunity, commerce, and connection to the outside world.

For decades, the railroad served as Summerville's economic lifeline, transporting timber from the surrounding Appalachian foothills, connecting local farmers to distant markets, and bringing visitors to experience the natural beauty of northwest Georgia. The historic Summerville Depot, still standing proudly in our downtown, remains a testament to those transformative years.

Engine 4501, now beautifully restored and operating scenic excursions from Chattanooga, represents that same spirit of connection and community building. Just as the railroad brought people together and sparked economic growth, craft beer has the power to create community and celebrate local pride.

From Rails to Ales: A Shared Mission

Today, as tourists step off the train at our historic depot and explore downtown Summerville, they're experiencing the same sense of discovery that the railroad first brought to our area. But there's been something missing—a place where locals and visitors alike can gather, share stories, and celebrate what makes Chattooga County special.

That's where Chattooga Brewing Company comes in.

As Summerville's first and only brewery—and the only craft brewery within a 50-mile radius—we're bringing that same community-building spirit that the railroad once provided. Our 4501 Lager isn't just named after a train; it's named after the idea that great things happen when people come together.

4501 Lager: Light-Bodied, Heavy on History

Coming this August 2025, our 4501 Lager will be available at select locations throughout Summerville. Light-bodied and porch-ready, it's crafted for those Saturday afternoon moments when the train whistle reminds us of our shared history and bright future.

Just like Engine 4501 continues to bring visitors to experience the beauty of our region, we're brewing 4501 Lager to give both locals and tourists a taste of authentic Summerville hospitality. It's a beer that honors our past while building toward our future—including our full brewery and taproom opening in downtown Summerville in fall 2026.

All Aboard for August

Whether you're a longtime Summerville resident who remembers when the railroad was king, or a visitor discovering our community for the first time, 4501 Lager will be your invitation to become part of our story.
